Most salary guides give you a single number without telling you the two factors that make any specific salary figure almost meaningless: the company's pay philosophy and the role's experience level. This guide covers both, and walks you through salary ranges for every major remote job category (junior, mid, and senior) alongside the frameworks you need to evaluate any offer you actually receive.
What our own listings show. Across the 500+ worldwide-open roles indexed on TrulyRemoteWork as of July 2026, only about 3% (roughly 1 in 30) advertise a salary at all. That one fact explains why remote pay is so hard to pin down: the roles that pay best often disclose least, and the public numbers skew heavily toward senior technical positions. The role mix is lopsided too. Engineering is about 36% of our open worldwide-remote listings, followed by marketing (~9%), sales (~8%), and data (~7%), which is why technical salaries dominate most remote pay conversations. Because no single source is complete, the ranges below are triangulated from several: Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, the Stack Overflow Developer Survey, Payscale, and the salaries employers actually advertise on remote boards, including ours.
Global Market Rate vs Location-Adjusted Pay: What's the Difference?
Before you can evaluate any remote salary number, you need to understand that there are two fundamentally different ways remote companies pay people, and they can produce a gap of 40–70% for identical work.
Global market rate means the company sets compensation based on the competitive rate for the role in its primary hiring market (almost always the United States or Western Europe), and pays that rate regardless of where you live. If a senior engineer in San Francisco earns $180,000, a senior engineer in Warsaw or Lagos earns $180,000 too. This model is common at early-stage startups, mission-driven tech companies, and companies that explicitly compete for global talent. GitLab, Automattic, Basecamp, Buffer, and Zapier have all used variants of global or near-global pay at various points.
Location-adjusted pay means the company benchmarks your compensation against the cost of labor in your specific city or country. Moving from San Francisco to Lisbon or Nairobi would reduce your salary by 40–70% under this model. Google, Meta, and many large technology enterprises have been transparent about using this approach. It is mathematically rational from the employer's perspective ($100,000 buys a very different standard of living in Nairobi than in New York), but it means employees doing identical work can earn dramatically different amounts based solely on their address.
The salary tables below reflect US market rates: what a company paying global rate would pay regardless of location. If you are interviewing with a location-adjusted company, apply the relevant geographic modifier to estimate your actual offer. For most of Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, location-adjusted rates typically fall 40–70% below US market rate.
As a mid-2026 benchmark, Glassdoor's aggregated US salary estimates (checked July 2026) put the average at roughly $145,000 for software engineers, $140,000 for product managers, $120,000 for data scientists, $108,000 for UX designers, and $104,000 for marketing managers. These are self-reported, employee-submitted figures that Glassdoor recalculates as new data arrives, so treat them as directional rather than exact; the marketing-manager estimate alone draws on the order of ten-thousand-plus self-reported salaries. Seventy-fifth-percentile pay runs roughly 30 to 45% above those averages (for example, around $191,000 for engineers and $198,000 for product managers), and Levels.fyi, which counts equity, reports a higher median total compensation of about $192,000 for software engineers. The tables below break each category down by experience level.
How to Ask Which Model a Company Uses
This is a question you should ask in the first or second conversation with a recruiter, before you invest significant time in the process. A simple phrasing that works:
"Just so I can calibrate expectations early, does your company use a global market rate compensation model or do you adjust salaries based on employee location? I want to make sure we're aligned before we get into specifics."
Legitimate remote companies will answer this clearly. It is a standard question at companies that hire internationally, and any recruiter who has done this before will have a ready answer. If you get evasion or vagueness, that is information too.

Sales compensation is the most performance-variable of any remote role. Base salary for an Account Executive at a well-funded SaaS company tells you only part of the story. On-target earnings (OTE) assuming quota attainment is the relevant comparison. A $70,000 base AE role with $140,000 OTE pays the same total compensation as a $140,000 base engineering role with no variable component, if the rep hits quota. Ask for OTE and historical quota attainment rates (what percentage of reps actually hit quota) when evaluating any sales role.
How to Negotiate Your Salary as an International Remote Worker
Salary negotiation for international remote workers follows the same principles as any negotiation (anchor high, justify your number, and negotiate on total compensation), but with a few critical differences specific to the remote context. 1. Know the pay model before you anchor. If the company uses global market rate, anchor on the US market rate for the role. Use Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, and LinkedIn Salary as data points. If the company uses location-adjusted pay, research the specific pay band for your location using Glassdoor reviews from employees in your country, or ask for their compensation framework directly.
2. Never anchor on your current salary. "What do you currently earn?" is a question designed to anchor the negotiation below market. In many jurisdictions, this question is now illegal. Deflect it: "I'd prefer to focus on the market rate for this role. I'm targeting [range] based on my research of comparable positions." Your current salary at a local employer is entirely irrelevant to what a US or European company should pay you for the same work.
3. Negotiate total compensation, not just base. If the base salary is non-negotiable (common at larger companies with rigid bands), negotiate on equity, signing bonus, learning and development budget ($2,000–$5,000 per year is standard at good companies), home office stipend ($1,000–$3,000 one-time), and conference/travel budgets. These are often more flexible than base.
4. Be explicit about the value of your timezone. If you work in a timezone that covers hours where the company's primary market is asleep (useful for customer support, incident response, or global operations), that has genuine business value. Name it: "My timezone means I can cover your Asia-Pacific support window without requiring other team members to work odd hours."
Why the Same Job Pays Very Differently at Different Companies
Three factors explain most of the variance in what the "same job" pays across different remote employers:
Company stage and funding. Pre-seed and seed-stage startups typically pay 70–85% of market rate in cash and compensate with equity. Series A and B companies aim for 85–95% of market rate. Series C and later, plus public companies, typically pay at or above market rate in cash. The equity value proposition declines as the company matures (less upside) but the cash compensation improves. Early-stage equity rarely produces life-changing outcomes; late-stage or public company equity has a clearer liquidity path.
Business model and margins. A SaaS software company with 80% gross margins generates far more revenue per employee than a services or consulting firm with 30% margins. High-margin businesses can and do pay engineers and product managers significantly more than lower-margin businesses. A "Senior Software Engineer" at a top-tier SaaS company and a "Senior Software Engineer" at an IT consulting firm nominally do similar things but operate in very different economic models that directly affect compensation.
Pay philosophy and culture. Some companies (Buffer, Basecamp, and others in the transparent salary movement) publish their compensation formulas and are explicit about how they think about pay. Others are deliberately opaque. Pay philosophy is set by founders and early leadership and is surprisingly sticky; companies that underpay early tend to continue underpaying as they scale. One useful signal: if a company cannot tell you what their compensation philosophy is, or is evasive about it, that is a meaningful data point about how they value employees.
